December 8th. Took the pulk out today for a test run at Rib Mountain State Park. Not much snow but enough. When I fitted the harness, there were plenty of laughs from the peanut gallery of one. But it all worked out.

This will be a great training device and has put thoughts of skiing across Iceland and that always hunting Greenland tour back into my head. Something along those lines will happen.

Pulk is a Norwegian word for a small sled, used for man-hauling supplies across snow and ice. This pulk is made by Granite Gear of Two Harbors, Minnesota.

AFTER THE FALL

I awoke early in the morning, flipped back my sleeping bag, tossed on my boots and headed out. It was dark and cold. But for the first time in six months, I wasn't focused on feeding chickens nor milking cows.

This was my first morning on the Superior Hiking Trail and I was glad to see stars overhead and a hint of my first 2011 Lake Superior sunrise.

Rain had stopped late the previous evening, so the morning air smelled fresh, with a hint of ozone. The sound of the nearby waterfalls here at Tettegouche State Park, my trailhead for this hike, came softly through the trees.

With an impending hunting season that would close privately owned sections of the trail, I had a small window of opportunity and decided to fill it with a short hike: Tettegouche to Two Harbors. This would put about 85 miles of backpacking under my belt, not enough for soul, but considering my timeline, it would have to do.

Without leaves, bird nests were visible.

Most of the leaves had fallen by this time, and with open vistas and light within the woods, I'd have the maximum number of hours to hike before needing a headlamp. I'd also be able to see and hear sounds that millions of leaves would typically keep at bay.

The entire trail would follow a nice single track down into valleys and up to overlooks as it winds parallel to the Lake Superior shoreline just a few miles to the southeast. (By day two had I personally renamed this the SHOT-Superior Hiking Overlook Trail- adding the extra "O" as I observed how many overlooks were included in the route).

As I crawled up my first of many overlooks, it dawned on me how wonderful the scenery was, despite the lack of leaves. I had mostly sunny days, and the grey poplar and white birch trees stood as sentinels against a sky of cobalt blue.

The valleys were warmer I discovered, and the overlooks, while improving my appreciation for the northern Minnesota range country, put me in the eye of brisk - cold - northwest winds. From my many drives up the North Shore, I really had now idea about the topography that the highway builders had eliminated down along the shoreline.

The first night's camp was on the Beaver River, upstream from Beaver Bay. Little did I know that this campsite, along with the other one located here on the river, is about 300 feet from the North Shore Mining Railroad double mainline. And trains ran every four hours, if my hazy memory serves me well. With multiple engined trains braking on the downhill run, and grunting on the uphill run, my longest block of shut-eye was...four hours.

After that 15.6 mile swagger through the woods, the following days would run just shy of that record. I'd planned on taking seven days to reach my pickup point near Two Harbors, but the hike seemed to go a bit faster. My pack was light, well under 30 pounds. My gear was minimum, except for one item. A camera and lens that weighed too much - probably more than five pounds. Compared to the other gear which my life depended on, this little item was pure pleasure - a little cast aluminum anchor.

The days went by mostly in silence. Three times I caught the sound of saws and once a portable drill. Hunting season was fast approaching and guys were working on their deer stands. I passed them in silence, unnoticed.

I encountered this doe and fawn (out of frame) twice as the trail looped near Silver Bay.

After coming down from an overlook at Fault Line Ridge, I stepped through a short, steep valley to catch a glimpse of hunter orange. Rounding the corner and starting up hill again sat a bearded man, wearing grey shorts, light-weight hiking boots, and a small pack wearing a hat I connect with a very warm climate.

The Australian long distance hiker Cam Honan sat idle, pondering his location on photo copies from the trail guide. A bit of conversation convinced me that this hiker was someone with miles of experience. After our meeting, I was energized by our conversation and left with thoughts of lighter packs, less gear, and more miles.

I arrived at my next camp in the canyons of the Split Rock River. Numerous log steps took me to a plateau just above the river. Great access for a canyon view and a resupply of water, plus a nice dry place to stretch my legs, made this a good location for the tent. While some hikers prefer using a tarp for shelter, supported by a single hiking pole, I opted for a light weight single person tent. Interior frost coated was a concern, of course, but adequate cross ventilation solved this problem for me.

The next morning I took off up canyon, crossed over a much narrower Split Rock River, then headed toward the Lake. Where the SHT turns south, a crew was working on a new steel prefabricated bridge over a small creek. Bridges along the SHT include simple spans consisting of a few narrow planks to timber King Pin plans, and these larger steel bridges. On frosty mornings, it was easier and safer to cross these waterways off bridge, avoiding an unnecessary slip with a loaded pack.

Observation showed that simple two-board bridges served two purposes: first, to provide a dry route over wet areas; and second, to provide red squirrels with a dry and reasonably nice place to pull apart pine cones and collect the seeds.

Under many bridges some waterways were dry this time of year, making scheduled water stops more difficult. I'm not one to carry gallons of water between camp sites, but after the first day of running with some serious dehydration, I made it a point to fill up along the way, excluding of course, those murky beaver ponds.

My third night was spent above the Gooseberry River. Dammed by eager beavers, the river is narrow with a slower than usual rush toward Lake Superior.

The woods were thin here, but within a few hours I was walking by the Encampment woods, old, thick, and green for all the coniferous trees. It felt more like the Pacific Northwest, with pine needle covered trails.

With grey skies and colder night temperatures, my fourth day on the trail was met with falling sleet, more noises, and more civilization. Within one day, the remote feeling of the trail was giving way to the noise of the city.

The mining railroad was no longer thundering in the distance but now small airplanes, commercial flights, and the sonic booms from military aircraft covered the sounds from woodpeckers, chickadees, and nuthatches. After crossing four roads, and mingling with power line corridors, the Silver Creek camp was getting closer. My greatest moment on the trail would happen soon.

After pitching my tent at Silver Creek, a toot toot from a Canadian National ore train descending toward the Two Harbors ore dock and loading facility broke the silence. Soon the dock roared to life and a rumble filled the entire night. The previous days' hikes were grand: quiet, remote, and good for the soul. Now the invasion of noise began to bother me. I blamed it partially on the lack of leaves, a lack of insulation they provided against the sounds of man.

This would be my last night on the trail.

I strolled around the site, worn from previous hiking parties and sought to capture something about the site that axes and saws had not disfigured; a twisted root around a balsam tree, my food bag hanging juxtaposed against the bare branches. Suddenly, a great barking and howling came from across the creek. A pack of wolves!

For an hour, this pack barked and howled and lit up the fading light of day with these sounds. The camp site sits a little above the creek which is carved through a shallow red rock canyon. The echoes were fabulous and I was in awe. One of the wolves came down to the creek and made a short dash through the water. In an instant is was gone, back up the embankment to its howling companions. Wow.

It was sunny when I unzipped the tent door and poked my head out the next morning. Heavy frost covered the leaves. The creek, low from the lack of water, quietly moved through the canyon. My food back still hung, undisturbed from night visitors, came down easily on the frosted cord.

Heading west parallel to Cty. Hwy. 2, the trail was flat and the scenery different than the past four days of hiking. It was day five, a little short of my goal, but the final day. My ride would meet me near Two Harbors, so my last miles would be spent on the shoulder of the highway that during the summer takes paddlers north to Ely and the Boundary Waters.

Over night I had decided to finish the last few miles of the trail around Two Harbors in the spring, after the leaves had regained their grip on the trees, providing more insulation from the noises of industry.

But today it was sunny and the hike was fast, all down hill toward Lake Superior. My legs were lose, my back strong, and my appetite for a smoothie stronger than ever. I watched in the distance as a small blue car, with dog and driver, pulled over on the shoulder. Smoothie time was near!

Okay, another trip to Finland, another overwhelming visual adventure. This update is a work in progress; they'll be more photos and captions shortly. In a nut shell, we spent good time in nature and the built environment, and a highlight was Alvar Aalto's Experimental House tour. For those of you who know about AA, photos cannot do this experience justice. For those of you who don't know about AA, take my word. It's free and less than a plane ticket. We also made numerous attempts to photograph and do some kitesurfing in the Baltic. Alas, either the light was bad or the wind was non-existent. But the scouting was an adventure in itself.

Alaska trips have always been very exciting and upon my first visit to Haines a short time ago, I found myself surrounded by a wild and grand natural. The weather is in constant flux, thus the light is also changing by the minute. It seems that many items arrive in Haines via shipping containers, even the park privy.

For nine miles, the trail went up and up and when I spotted the sign at Upper Lena Lake showing the campsite locations, a smile came to my face. Located at about 4,550 feet/1386 meters, the views were spectacular, the air fresh and the huckleberries delicious. A note about the huckleberries - all berries were harmed after being photographed. A side trip to Milk Lake on Sunday provided a nice warm up for the muscles before descending back to the trailhead. It is milky in appearance because of the glacial silt it contains.
